INTRODUCTION
We can't see it, but we can feel it. The energy around us and within us shapes our moods, health, relationships, and even what we attract into our lives. Whether you're walking into a room and instantly sensing tension, or you're feeling uplifted by someone's presence without a word spoken, you're tapping into something deeper than what the eye can see.
Both science and spirituality agree on one thing: we are energetic beings living in an energetic universe. They may speak different languages, but at their core, they're describing the same thing—an invisible force that connects everything.
THE SCIENCE OF ENERGY
From a scientific perspective, energy is everywhere. Our bodies, brains, and environments are full of complex energetic systems working in harmony (or sometimes disharmony).
Bioelectricity: Our nervous system sends signals through electrical impulses—tiny sparks that control every thought, movement, and reaction.
The Heart's Electromagnetic Field: Research shows that the heart generates the electromagnetic field in the body—and it can be detected up to several feet away.
Frequency and Vibration: Everything in nature vibrates at a certain frequency, from atoms to sound waves. This principle is foundational in both physics and healing practices like sound therapy.
Cellular Energy: At the smallest level, mitochondria within our cells produce energy that powers everything our body does—from breathing to healing.
Environmental Energies: Circadian rhythms (our body's internal clock) are synced with light and dark, and we're constantly influenced by electromagnetic fields from the earth, sun, and even technology.
While we may not see energy with our eyes, we live in it, breathe it, and are made of it. We ARE energy.
THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF ENERGY
Spiritual traditions have talked about energy for thousands of years, long before science caught up. The concept of life force (prana, chi, or spirit), is central to practices around the world. These systems teach us that our well-being depends on how energy flows through us.
Chakras and Energy Centres: Many traditions believe we have energy hubs in our bodies that affect different aspects of our physical, emotional, and spiritual health.
Auras and Energy Fields: Some people can sense or see the subtle energy that surrounds others, often called an aura.
Vibrational Alignment: The idea that everything—including our thoughts and emotions—vibrates, and that we can align with higher frequencies through intention, gratitude, or healing practices.
Energy Healing: Practices like Reiki, acupuncture, and crystal healing aim to balance and restore energy flow within the body.
PERSONAL NOTE
For me personally, energy has never been something I visualize easily. While many people describe picturing chakras as spinning wheels of colour or envisioning light flowing through the body, I've always found those kinds of visualizations too abstract. I don't see energy—I feel it. Sometimes it's a heaviness or a lightness, a sense of calm or tension. That doesn't make the experience any less real or powerful.
Everyone connects with energy in their own way, and that's not only okay—it's necessary. There is no right or wrong way to make that connection; your experience will be very personal, and learning to trust that is part of the journey.
BRIDGING THE GAP
So how do we bring the spiritual and the scientific together?
Science gives us a framework to understand the mechanisms behind energy—the electrical charges in our cells, the resonance of sound waves, or the coherence of our heart rhythms. Spirituality gives us a language to describe how we experience energy—the way space can feel "off", how certain people lift us up or drain us, and how rituals or intentions can make us feel more grounded or connected.
When we meditate, we help to regulate our nervous system and balance our energy. When we practice gratitude, we can shift both our emotional frequency and the chemistry in our brain. When we use tools like crystals, sound, or breathwork, we're engaging with both tangible and intangible forces—science and spirit, working together.
CONCLUSION
Whether you see it, feel it, or just have a sense that it's there, energy is part of everything. Becoming aware of your own energy and how if shifts, what affects it, or how you share it, can change how you experience the world.
